Your bike loan doesn’t end with your last EMI. Until you remove the lender’s name from your RC, the bike is not fully yours on paper. To do that, you need the NOC or No Objection Certificate. Without it, the RC continues to show the lender’s name, and that can block future actions like selling or transferring the bike.

A NOC becomes important when you plan to sell your bike, move it to another state, or update the RC in your name. Many people realise this only when they are already in the middle of a sale or relocation and by then, the wait feels longer than it should.

Getting the two-wheeler loan NOC process done is not difficult. You just need to know the sequence, which document to get first, what to carry, and where to go. That's what this guide covers.

What Is a NOC for a Bike?

NOC stands for No Objection Certificate. When you buy a bike on loan, the lender's name is also added to your RC along with your name. This is known as hypothecation. After you pay off the loan, the lender issues a NOC or loan closure certificate confirming that they no longer have any claim on your bike.

There is also a NOC issued by the RTO. This is required when you want to register your bike in another state.

When Do You Need a NOC?

There are three common situations where a NOC is required.

To update the RC in your name

Even after full repayment, the lender's name stays printed on it until you go through the hypothecation removal process. It doesn't update automatically. To do that, you need a NOC.

To sell the bike

You cannot transfer the ownership of the vehicle at the RTO without a NOC from the lender.

To move to another state for over a year

Say you're relocating from one state to another and taking the bike along. After a year, you need to de-register from the previous state RTO and register fresh in the new state. For that, you need an RTO NOC from your current state. If there's an active loan, the NOC from the lender comes before that.

Bike Loan NOC Procedure in India: Getting the NOC from Your Lender

The vehicle loan NOC documents are mostly digital today, and it doesn't take long if your dues are clear. Before starting the process, make sure your loan is actually fully closed by logging in to your lender's portal/app or calling them. Here is what the two-wheeler loan NOC process looks like on the lender side.

Log in to your lender’s portal or app and go to the loan services section. Look for the NOC or loan closure request option and keep the required vehicle loan NOC documents ready, including your RC copy, insurance, and ID proof.

Once the request is processed, you can download the NOC from the portal or collect it from the branch.

Processing usually happens within 4 to 48 hours. If there's a manual check involved, it might stretch to a couple of days. The financier or bank NOC vehicle loan lenders issue is valid only for 90 days. Once you have it, act on it faster.

Bike Loan NOC Procedure in India: Getting the NOC from the RTO

The RTO NOC is only needed if you're moving the bike to another state. For removing hypothecation or selling the bike, the lender NOC alone is sufficient.

Start by visiting the Parivahan portal and opening Vahan Citizen Services. From there, choose your state and the RTO where your bike is currently registered. You’ll then need to fill out Form 28. Keep your vehicle registration number and the last five digits of the chassis number handy. You’ll also be asked for the destination state and RTO.

Once that’s done, pay the ₹100 fee online and print the receipt. Visit the RTO in person with printed Form 28, fee receipt, RC copy, insurance, road tax proof, PUC certificate, a pencil print of the engine and chassis number, a valid photo ID, and the lender NOC.

The RTO issues the NOC after verification. It is valid for about six months, which gives you enough time to complete registration in the new state.

What to Do After You Have the NOC

Removing hypothecation from the RC

Take the lender NOC to your local RTO with Form 35 (the hypothecation termination form) and a copy of the RC. The RTO updates the record and issues the RC in your name.

Selling the bike

Hand the lender NOC to the buyer. They'll submit it along with the other transfer documents at their RTO to get the RC moved into their name.

Moving to another state

Submit the lender NOC at your current RTO as part of the RTO NOC application. Once you receive the RTO NOC, take it to the new state's RTO. This is where the RC transfer after loan closure gets completed, through a fresh registration in your name.

A Note on Fees

Most lenders issue NOC without any charges after loan closure. It's worth confirming with your lender, as a few may have a small processing fee.

For the RTO NOC, the fee is ₹100 as standard, though it may vary slightly by state.

Conclusion

The two-wheeler loan NOC process is usually overlooked, until you actually need it. Once you understand how to apply NOC for bike loan, you will find that the steps are simple, but they do follow a specific order. Get the NOC from the lender first, then use it for whatever comes next, whether that's updating the RC, selling the bike, or re-registering in a new state. Both documents have validity periods, so once you have them, move forward without delay.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it mandatory to get the NOC after closing a two-wheeler loan?

Yes. The lender's name stays on the RC until you use the NOC to remove the hypothecation. You can't sell or transfer the bike without clearing that first.

How long does it take to get the NOC from the bank?

Anywhere between 4 hours and 2 working days, depending on the lender. Manual checks can push it a bit longer.

Can I get NOC online?

Most lenders have online processes for this. If something goes wrong on the portal, a branch visit with your loan account details usually sorts it quickly.

What if the NOC expires before I use it?

You'll need to request a fresh one. The 90-day window moves faster especially if you're waiting on RTO appointments or a buyer.

Do I need both the lender NOC and the RTO NOC?

The lender NOC is required for the hypothecation removal process and ownership transfer. The RTO NOC is required for moving the bike to another state for more than a year and register it there.
