Can I Release Part of My Gold Before the Loan Ends?
Let’s say you pledged a few gold items to take a gold loan. A few months later, you have repaid a good portion of the loan, but now you need one item back for an urgent family requirement.
The question is: can you get back part of your pledged gold before closing the loan completely?
Typically, you can but only if the gold left with the lender is still enough to secure the outstanding loan amount within the applicable LTV limit.
How the LTV Rule Decides whether You Can Get Your Gold
Part-release refers to the lender returning one or more pledged gold items while your gold loan continues against the remaining gold.
Different from gold loan foreclosure, where you repay the full outstanding amount and take back all the pledged gold at once; in a part-release, your gold loan stays active, and only the released items come back to you.
Not every lender offers part-release as a standard option, so the process usually depends on the loan balance, the current value of the remaining gold, and branch-level approval.
Understanding How LTV Affects Part-Release
The Loan-to-Value ratio, or LTV, decides how much loan can be sanctioned against the value of the pledged gold.
Under the revised RBI framework effective April 1, 2026, the applicable LTV is tiered:
- 85% for loans up to ₹2.5 lakh
- 80% for loans between ₹2.5 lakh and ₹5 lakh
- 75% for loans above ₹5 lakh
For part-release, the remaining gold must still support the outstanding loan within the applicable LTV limit for that specific slab.
For example, if your loan falls in the ₹2.5 lakh to ₹5 lakh bracket, the branch will check whether the gold left with them can still secure the outstanding amount within the 80% limit. If not, you may need to make a partial repayment first.
Not sure which slab your loan falls into? Check your original loan agreement or call your branch to confirm your outstanding balance before visiting.
How to Request a Part-Release at the Branch: Step by Step
Part-release is usually handled at the branch where the loan was originally booked.
Usually, there is no self-service option online, so you will have to visit the branch for the request. The branch team will check the outstanding balance, the current value of the remaining gold, and whether the loan still meets the applicable LTV condition.
Here is what typically happens:
- Visit the branch with your loan details.
- Carry your KYC documents and repayment proof, if available.
- Ask the team to check whether part-release is possible.
- Make any partial repayment required to meet the LTV condition.
- Once the check is complete, the specific gold item may be released.
Part-Release of Pledged Gold: If You Want One Specific Item Back from a Multi-Item Pledge
If you pledged multiple items, the lender treats them as combined security for the loan.
That means one specific item can usually be returned only if the remaining items are still sufficient to support the outstanding balance. If the remaining gold is not enough, the branch may ask for additional repayment before release.
Since gold prices can change over time, the value of the pledged gold may also change between the loan date and the release request date. That is usually why the branch reassessment matters. Branch reassessment usually means the lender physically inspects and re-weighs the pledged gold and re-values it using the current market gold price (not the original loan-date rate). The lender then adjusts the loan outstanding, interest, or required additional collateral accordingly.

What Happens after Part-Release?
The loan does not end after part-release. It continues with the remaining pledged gold as security.
Your EMI or interest obligation also does not automatically reduce unless you make a separate partial prepayment. If you want to reduce the burden as well as retrieve some gold, ask the branch whether both can be done together.
When Part-Release May Not Be Possible
A part-release request may be declined if the remaining gold does not meet the required LTV condition for the outstanding loan.
In that case, you may need to repay more of the loan before the gold can be released. The final decision depends on the current gold value, the loan slab, and the branch assessment.
