Can I apply for a business loan without a registered business?

It is possible to apply for a business loan in India while not having a formal business registration. If your business is not registered, there are some non-banking financial companies (NBFCs), fintech lenders, microfinance institutions that may be prepared to consider your loan application. They will often be looking for alternative proof including:

  • GST returns or GST registration
  • Bank statement showing regular business transactions
  • Business certificate or licenses
  • Udyam or MSME registration
  • Sales or purchase invoices

Occasionally, for self-employed professionals using proof of professional qualification or proof of practice may suffice.

Programmes supported by the government like MUDRA, or certain micro-loans might support informal businesses, and if you have regular cash flow and a good credit score, you're likely to qualify.

Always remember that loans without formal business registration usually mean stricter eligibility checks, higher interest rates or collateral requirement. You may get better eligibility by growing your credit score along with having clear and accurate records by your business.
