What are the legal rights of a personal loan borrower?

When you take a personal loan, the law doesn’t leave you helpless. The RBI has set rules so that lenders deal with borrowers in a fair and rightful manner.

Fair Treatment

Recovery people are expected to treat you with respect. Your loan or salary details can’t be shared with others without your consent.

Right Information

You can always ask for a written note of what you still owe — interest, EMIs, or any extra charges. Before a lender starts recovery or legal steps, you must get a proper written notice and some time to respond. If your loan was against a pledge, and the item is sold, whatever remains after dues must come back to you.

If Things Go Wrong

Write to the lender’s complaint desk first. Keep copies of letters or emails. If nothing moves, go to the RBI Banking Ombudsman or a consumer court. Simple records — dates, screenshots, receipts — protect you better than long arguments.
