What documents are necessary for NRIs to obtain a gold loan?

Typically, the key documents necessary for Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) to obtain a gold loan are:

  1. Passport: This is the most important document to establish NRI status and overseas address proof. A valid passport with visa stamps is usually required.
  2. PAN Card: PAN card is mandatory for all gold loan applicants in India, irrespective of residential status. The PAN will be linked to the loan account.
  3. Overseas Address Proof: As NRIs cannot provide local Indian address proofs, lenders generally ask for overseas bank statements, utility bills, or rent agreements showing your foreign residence address.
  4. Identity Proof: Some lenders may require additional ID proofs, such as a driver's license or voter ID card, though a passport is the primary ID document.
  5. Co-applicant Documents: The Indian co-applicant has to provide standard Know Your Customer (KYC) documents - ID, address proof, photographs - as per gold loan eligibility norms applicable to resident Indians.
  6. Photographs: Passport-size photographs of the NRI applicant are required.
  7. Employment Documents: If you are employed overseas, some banks or Non-banking Financial Companies (NBFCs) may require your employment contract, or salary slips as proof of income.
  8. Tax Documents: Loan providers may also seek your latest overseas tax returns or bank account statements to ascertain your financial status.
