Can a personal loan be used to fund a wedding or other large personal events?

A wedding or any big family event can strain savings, and that’s usually when people think of a personal loan. It’s simply a way to spread the cost over time instead of paying everything in one go. You feel the usefulness of it most during months when multiple payments line up — caterer, hall, travel, jewellery — and you need some breathing room.

Most lenders allow personal loans for weddings, anniversaries, milestone birthdays and similar events since personal loans do not come with end-use restrictions. You’ll see this clearly when you check the “purpose” section on the application page.

How it works

The loan amount comes into your bank account, and you use it the way you need — advance payments, final settlements or smaller vendor bills.

What to watch

It’s easy to underestimate the total cost of a function. So, before applying, check your budget once more and see what you can comfortably repay each month. A long tenure may reduce the EMI but raises the total interest.

If the event gets scaled down later, you can part-prepay the loan. Just keep in mind about the fees associated with part-prepayment of the loan.
