Do I Need to Register to Use BBPS?

No, registration is not mandatory for making bill payments on BBPS. Users can access BBPS services through participating banks and non-bank platforms (such as digital wallets, websites, and apps) without creating a separate BBPS account.

Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS) is a centralised platform developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) that facilitates interconnected  and standardised bill payments across India.

Here is how BBPS works for different users:

User TypeRegistration Required?Access Mode
General Consumers (Retail Users)Not requiredBank apps, UPI apps, mobile wallets, etc.
BillersRequiredNeed to register with BBPOUs (Operating Units)
Agents/Agent InstitutionsRequiredMust onboard through authorised entities

Key Highlights for Consumers

  • No additional sign-up needed: Simply use any BBPS-enabled platform (e.g., bank apps, Paytm, PhonePe, Google Pay).
  • Wide range of bills supported: Electricity, water, gas, telecom, DTH, insurance premiums, loan EMIs, and more.
  • Receipts and instant confirmation: All payments have a reference number and digital receipt.
  • Secure and regulated: Managed under the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) oversight.

When Registration is Relevant

Registration with a BBPOU is required if you are a business or biller wishing to collect payments via BBPS.

For regular users, BBPS offers easy, instant, and secure bill payments without the hassle of a separate registration process.

Some services may ask you to register separately on their own website or app to use their features, but this registration is different from the official Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS) registration.

BBPS does have a customer registration process within the system for certain features like mapping billers to a customer ID, but this is optional and not mandatory for making payments.
