What happens if I don’t recharge my prepaid number?

If you forget to recharge your prepaid mobile number when your plan runs out it does not stop at once. It is a gradual process. At first what you will see is that you lose access to outgoing calls, SMS, and data. Incoming calls usually have a grace period of a few days which extends that service. That grace period does vary by which company you use but is very much a few days.

If you do not recharge within this time frame also you will see that incoming calls are blocked. Your SIM will stop working for both outgoing and incoming services. By leaving your number unused for a great while your service may be turned off permanently. This may result in your mobile number to be deactivated and maybe given to another person in the future. You will lose all of your contacts, tied in services, and any leftover balance or benefits.

Operators in India also send out SMS’s when your plan is running out which is before it expires and also during the grace period. These alerts are to make sure that you do not experience accidental service disruption. To keep your number active all you have to do is recharge into any valid plan before the grace period ends. Even the smallest recharge is enough to keep your SIM active and prevent disconnection.

It is a practice to put in the time to track when your plan runs out and to set reminders as a backup if you have to. Also this is very important if you use your number for things like bank OTPs, work lines or family contact. By staying on top of your recharges you avoid the stress of losing your number and also stay connected at all times.
