Yes, you can definitely keep your existing mobile number when you switch from a prepaid to a postpaid connection. The process is called Mobile Number Portability (MNP) and is facilitated by all major operators like Airtel, Jio, Vi etc.
To port your number to a postpaid plan, follow these steps:
- Choose the postpaid plan you want to switch to and apply for number porting at the new operator's store.
- Submit your proof of identity, existing mobile number and filled MNP application form.
- The new operator will then initiate the porting process, which typically takes 3-5 working days.
- During this time, your existing prepaid connection will remain active to avoid any disruption in services.
- Once ported, the old SIM will stop working, and the same mobile number will start working on the new postpaid connection.
- Set up account details, auto-pay, billing preferences, etc, for your new postpaid connection.
