How can I protect myself from fake recharge messages?

In India, it is essential to protect yourself against fake recharge messages in 2025 when scams are becoming more sophisticated. Fraudsters fake messages in the name of recharge deals. They fake message you and sometimes even use names of government bodies or telecom authorities. They send links for fake websites where they steal your data.

When you recharge your mobile number, always recharge through official websites, trusted apps, or through authorised retail outlets. Do not click or input link details sent to you through a SMS / WhatsApp / Email asking you to get free recharge or unbelievable offers. These are often traps to steal your sensitive data/information and or install malware on your device.

Don’t ever share your OTPs, passwords, or any other personal details to anyone over the phone or through messages. Your mobile operator will never ask you for those. Always verify suspicious claims. For instance, if a transaction failed and urgent recharges were offered, check your account on the official app or website. Don’t act on messages asking or forward it, or share you details claiming there is a prize.

If you get a suspicious message, please contact your operator or any government portals such as the Sanchar Saathi or Cybercrime portal. Being vigilant and reporting scams will protect not only yourself but others as well.

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Always double check before you do anything. It will only take a few seconds and could potentially save you a lot of money as well as your data
